Maybe aged wax makes a difference
I had long wanted this candle with the stand, wick holder and glass cylinder, but couldn’t think of how I’d justify it. Finally I went ahead because I’d have kicked myself if I did figure out a use and it was no longer available That was back in October, 2023. The box sat there, unopened box for almost 13 months. Then, in mid-November, 2024, a friend suggested that quiet time in the morning could help calm the rest of my day. Nothing fancy, just a specific place, a good book, and possibly a candle to help me focus. I now had a use for the candle! Also, I didn’t want a jangly alarm, nor to be distracted by constantly having to check the clock.I unboxed and set it up that day and the next morning extended almost 2 inches of wax, based on other reviewer’s experience with the wax burning much faster than the stated 25 minutes per inch. I didn’t time it that day, but the candle seemed to burn for almost an hour. Over the next couple days I have “calibrated” my candle to half an inch burning for just over 16 minutes, which is about the length of time I want. The wax is easy to measure; it’s the amount contained in the extinguishing clip. The only thing I can figure is that aged candle wax burns longer than fresh. Given that this one burns so well, I think I’ll buy a replacement coil now so it can age too.

Candle by the Hour…
This candle was purchased as a gift. Not to burn, simply for decor purposes. It is different and unique. Industrial & Contemporary! Totally a conversation piece… Well Done…

Lovely, but only burns for 35 minutes at a time without major attention.
I only use candles to entertain or for power outages. Every time, I’m exquisitely aware of the dangers of ever leaving a burning candle unattended. Second to that has always been the glorious ambiance a beautiful candle brings to a space.I’m asthmatic to powerfully-scented candles (think “Yankee”), strong perfumes, most flowers, pollen, you know the thing. But for some reason, NOT my neighbor’s small organic bee-keeping operation or hive products. Or locally-grown produce. This “Candle by the Hour 80-Hour Horizontal Candle, Eco-friendly Natural Beeswax with Cotton Wick” description, reviews, and videos were compelling. So on a wing and a prayer, I ordered one horizontal and one vertical candle, figuring I’ll trial one, and gift the other to my daughter’s family this upcoming Christmas (2025) if it passes muster. The two candle configurations arrived on time, well-boxed, and sealed in plastic. I broke open the seal on the horizontal one I was giving myself. And was hit with its natural aromatics. Incredibly, it didn’t trigger my asthma. In fact, I liked it. Even its flame is clean — how is that possible? So I carefully hand-warmed, uncoiled, and threaded up the virgin candle’s first 2” through the cold metal clamp. Judging by my cell phone’s stopwatch, the candle’s first inch burned very fast, but its second inch didn’t. In fact, it took its time, almost in protest, until its very melted bottom atop the clamp was liquefied and the flame ‘self-extinguished.’ I decided my timing test wouldn’t be fair, because there was a draft, it was the wax coil’s debut, and I was learning. When I went to rethread the next length up to display it on my bookcase until next use, I realized what made the design concept “self-extinguishing” was that the wick itself COMPLETELY burns to ASH at which point, the melted wax that pools in the concave clamp douses the last flicker of flame! So I had to turn the entire frame and candle on its side over a paper towel, and go at the wick from the sides and underside with a lighter to expose it. Once enough wax was melted away from the wick within, I was able to get enough wick to relight.I decided, ok, I’ve verified its “self-extinguishing feature,” not that I’d ever trust it. Now let me test it with no drafts, and time the replenished length to burn just short of ‘self-extinguishing,’ leaving little more than 1/4 inch up from the hot pooled wax. The candle burned for 35 minutes. So best case, 2” of candle yields 35 minutes.Given the length of my dinner parties and the manufacturer saying only advance 2” of candle at a time, I’d have to rethread the candle at least FOUR times!!! Given how busy my kitchen, guests, and other wonderful and spontaneous my events are, I’ve no time to fuss on my table’s centerpieces — no matter their ‘beauty.’Rather, the candle is best suited for small group or intimate sacred, decompression, or ‘down’ time.I found most of the Amazon reviews and videos helpful, especially those whom said the coil must be warmed (by hand or hairdryer (!) ) before advancing the next length through the clamp. One reviewer remarked how he would advance the candle midway through his dinner parties. I’m guessing his parties were centered more on the candle than his guests. I know — ouch. The frame and hardware are solid duty. Especially the ‘candle clamp,’ which slides the length of the frame to meet wherever the remaining candle remains (the candle’s coil doesn’t slide easily up to meet it on the frame). The frame’s pan beneath ensures no hot wax will drip beyond. Technically, its metal feet are ‘protected’ with padding but haphazardly, so I’d still advise a plate underneath to protect any good furniture.

Warm & beautiful
We use this during dinner time when we want ambience without added scent. It does have an aroma but it just smells warm & honey like. I love that it self extinguishes & it’s so beautiful it’s constantly asked about

It Reeks!!!
I would have returned it the moment it filled my house with an artificial chemical smell, unlike any beeswax candle I’ve had before. But they say it’s natural, so I gave it time to air out. It’s been weeks, and it still makes the house stinks of a horrible artificial scent. Going to put it outside for a few days to air out and see if I can at least use it as a show piece. When it comes to burning beeswax, I’ll just get a regular beeswax candle.

What has changed?
The last 3 candles I have received have not wanted to stay lit. When the candle does stay lit it drips much worse than the previous ones.

So deliciously fragrant, even unlit, that you’ll think you actually live inside a beehive.

My first time to burn I pulled up 1.5″ (measured) to check on the burn time. Three inches is supposed to burn in one hour, so 1.5″ would burn 30 minutes.I’m a beekeeper and I do make candles and sell them but I can’t make these specialized candles. I love this antique idea of having a courtship candle. Back in the day, the parents would set the candle length for the burn time. Then the suitor would visit and then when the candle self-snuffs, it’s his time for him to leave. These courtship candles self snuff whereas the wrought iron ones burn by the hour but don’t snuff.Being beeswax, depending on where you live, if the wax is cold it can break when you pull on it but it’ll heat up incredibly quickly just from the heat of your fingers. So if you wrap your fingers around the wax for just a few seconds before you pull it up that will prevent breakage. It burned with a nice flame with no drafts which will speed up burn time. I didn’t order the glass cylinder, mostly because I know beeswax burns better with lots of access to oxygen. The unit is about 10″ tall. The copper is lovely and the whole thing looks well made. The candle burned for 35 minutes and then self-snuffed. So it was 5 minutes more than the estimate. Love this old fashioned candle.
